Carmel Boys, Cathedral Girls Win Team Championships in Indiana By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor Indiana's one-size-fits all state track and field championships returned over the weekend after the pandemic forced a cancellation in 2020. The meet was moved away from the college campus at Bloomington to Ben Davis High in Indianapolis. Tucker Smith, the No. 2 shot-putter in the country, was one of the standouts. The junior from Columbus North threw 67-11.25 to win the title. As a freshman in 2019, Smith was second. Carmel won the boys title with 68 points and got huge contributions from Owen Schafer, who won the 400 metrs in 48.36 seconds, and Kole Mathison, who was second in the 3,200 meters. Schafer was part of a victorious 4x400 relay (3:18.90) and Mathison was on the second-place 4x800. Will Jefferson from Whiteland Community won the 3,200 meters in 8:54.05. It was a two-second PR and he improved from 12th place in the 2019 meet. Ezra Lewellan of Pioneer won the boys 100 meters in 10.67 seconds. Connor Czajkowski from Harrison took the 200 in 21.55. John Colquitt from Brownsville swept the hurdles finals, taking the 110s in 14.53 and the 300s in 37.84. Three boys finished under 4:10 in the 1,600, with Camden Marshall from Corydon Central winning it in 4:07.31. Kamryen Garrett from Lawrence Central won the high jump with a clearance at 7 feet. Riley Johnston from Hobart made 16-6 to win the pole vault. The Indianapolis Cathedral girls pulled out the team title in dramatic fashion, needing to win the 4x400 -- and delivering -- to pull off a one-point victory over Warren Central. Reese Sanders of Cathedral won the 300-meter hurdles in 43.36 before contributing to the relay win (3:54.24). She was also third in the 100 hurdles. Huntington North's Addison Wiley won the 800/1,600 double, pairing 2:08.62 with 4:45.27. Taylor Jarosinski from Center Grove cleared 13 feet to win the pole vault. Michelle Nazarov from Zionsville won the long jump with 19 feet. Ramiah Elliott from North Central (Indianapolis) swept the 200 (24.33) and the 400 (55.08).
